Qatar has announced the expulsion of key Iranian diplomatic officials, declaring the military and security attachés at the Iranian Embassy in Doha “persona non grata” following recent attacks targeting the country’s strategic infrastructure.
In an official statement issued on March 18, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that both attachés, along with their staff, have been ordered to leave the country within 24 hours.
The decision was formally conveyed during a meeting between Qatar’s Director of Protocol Ibrahim Yousif Fakhro and Iran’s Ambassador to Doha.
Qatari authorities described the move as a direct response to what they called repeated Iranian aggression against the country.
The ministry stated that these actions constituted a clear violation of Qatar’s sovereignty and security, as well as a breach of international law and established principles of good neighbourly relations.
Officials emphasized that the expulsion reflects one of the strongest diplomatic measures taken by Doha amid escalating regional tensions. The government also warned that further hostile actions could prompt additional countermeasures to safeguard national interests.
Linked to Ras Laffan Attack
The diplomatic escalation comes shortly after Iranian missile strikes targeted Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, a critical hub for global liquefied natural gas (LNG) production. The attack reportedly caused fires and significant damage to facilities, heightening concerns over energy security in the region.
Qatar strongly condemned the strike, describing it as a dangerous escalation and a direct threat to both national and regional stability. Authorities reiterated their long-standing position against targeting civilian and energy infrastructure.
Warning of Further Measures
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that Qatar reserves the right to take all necessary steps under international law to protect its sovereignty and ensure the safety of its territory and people.
It also signalled that continued escalation by Iran could lead to further diplomatic or strategic actions, underscoring the seriousness of the current crisis.
