Knysna, South Africa – May 5, 2025 — The motorsport world is mourning the sudden and tragic loss of South African racing driver Peter Jubeir, who died following a high-speed crash during the 2025 Simola Hill Climb in Knysna on Sunday, May 4th.
Jubeir, a seasoned competitor known for his fearless driving and dedication to the sport, was participating in the first qualifying run of the day behind the wheel of his distinctive yellow Mercedes-AMG V8-powered Lotus Exige when the fatal accident occurred.
Fatal Crash During High-Speed Qualifier
According to eyewitness reports, the accident took place on a fast uphill straight section of the course. Jubeir appeared to lose control of the vehicle, which veered off the track and collided with trees at high speed. Although the official cause is still under investigation, some observers at the scene suggested that a mechanical failure—possibly involving the steering system—may have contributed to the crash.
Emergency medical personnel responded promptly, but despite their efforts, Peter Jubeir was pronounced dead at the scene.
First Fatality in Simola Hill Climb’s History
This heartbreaking incident marks the first fatality in the 15-year history of the Simola Hill Climb, one of South Africa’s premier motorsport events. Jubeir’s death has cast a shadow over the competition and sent shockwaves through the racing community.
Just a day before the accident, Jubeir had demonstrated exceptional form—setting the fastest time in Class B7 and ranking 13th overall on Saturday’s time sheets.

Peter Jubeir was no stranger to the Simola Hill Climb. A beloved and regular participant, he earned widespread respect for his sportsmanship, technical skill, and unwavering commitment to the sport. Despite the tragedy, Peter’s family urged event organizers to continue the race in his honor. As a result, the King of the Hill segment resumed later that same day—a poignant tribute to Jubeir’s passion and the unity of the motorsport community.

The Managing Director of the Knysna Speed Festival, Ian Shrosbree, expressed his sorrow in an official statement:
