Today, we bid a heartbreaking farewell to one of South Africa’s most beloved actors: Presley Chweneyagae. Known for his powerful roles in the Oscar-winning film Tsotsi, the popular series The River, and Kabritzi, Presley’s talent and presence touched millions.
On May 27, 2025, the 40-year-old actor apparently died of respiratory difficulties. Sadly, Presley was not able to be saved despite paramedics’ emergency efforts.
Fans and coworkers have expressed their love and sorrow at his demise. In a touching TikTok tribute, Thabiso Ramotshela, who portrayed Cobra’s son Morena Mokwepa on The River, wrote:
“I love you, Pops. Goodbye.” We will see you shortly.
Many people were obviously moved by their on-screen bond.
Presley Chweneyagae Funeral & Memorial Details Revealed
The River is just one aspect of Presley’s legacy. His innovative performance in Tsotsi contributed to the movie’s 2006 Academy Award triumph for Best Foreign Language Film. In addition, he starred in iNumber Number and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, demonstrating his remarkable versatility and nuance as an actor.
Two memorial ceremonies have been announced by family spokesperson Mpho Segela:
Third of June in Mahikeng
Fifth of June in Pretoria
The site of the funeral has not yet been confirmed, but it will take place on Saturday, June 7.
