Freddie Aguilar, the legendary voice behind the global hit Anak, has passed away at the age of 72.

Aguilar died around 1:30 a.m. on May 27th, at the Philippine Heart Center, reportedly due to complications from a blocked artery. He is survived by his wife Jovi, their children, and millions of fans around the world who grew up with his music.

With the poignant ballad Anak, which sold 33 million copies and was translated into more than 50 languages, Freddie Aguilar became a global celebrity. The 1986 People Power Revolution’s unofficial soundtrack was the patriotic anthem Bayan Ko, which he also brought back to life.

In addition to being a singer, Aguilar represented the Filipino spirit and served as a cultural, identity, and protest icon. He was a member of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Presidential Adviser on Culture and the Arts, appointed by former President Rodrigo Duterte.

In line with Islamic custom, Ka Freddie will be buried within 24 hours of becoming a Muslim convert. Abdul Farid was his Muslim name.
From humble beginnings to global acclaim, Freddie Aguilar leaves behind a legacy that changed Original Pilipino Music (OPM) forever.

Rest in peace, Ka Freddie. Your voice and your message will echo for generations.
