She was 18, a rising basketball star and a future U.S. Air Force cadet—but Ava Mur’s life was cut short in a horrific hit-and-run on Grapevine Lake. Now, the woman accused of killing her, Derlin Alleendra Gonzalez, has been arrested.
It took place on Sunday, May 26, close to Grapevine Lake’s Oak Grove Park. Ava was struck by a speeding jet ski while kayaking. She had serious head injuries. Hours after witnesses brought her ashore and tried CPR, the doctors declared her dead.
That jet ski had two women on it. Gonzalez left the scene with a male companion, while the other remained. They left their cars, collided with another vehicle, and disappeared.

A few days after the police publicized the photo on Memorial Day, Gonzalez was taken into custody at a South Dallas residence. The raid involves a number of authorities, including Homeland Security and local police.

Ava Mur has recently been assigned to the Academy Prep School of the Air Force. She had her entire future ahead of her, was talented, and was adored. Her family has been demanding justice because her death caused indignation.
Now, that justice may finally be underway—but the investigation is far from over, including the hit-and-run that followed the crash.

Rest in peace, Ava Mur. May your story never be forgotten.
